Short Bio:
Professor Antonios Rengakos is a distinguished scholar of Ancient Greek Philology with an international academic profile and a longstanding contribution to classical studies. He studied Classics at the University of Freiburg, where he received his B.A. (1979), Ph.D. (1982), and completed his Habilitation (1991).

He held teaching appointments at the University of Vienna (1994–1995) and the University of Freiburg (1991–1997). Since 1997, he has served as Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he has played a central role in research, teaching, and academic leadership.

Professor Rengakos’s research focuses on Homeric studies, Greek historiography, and Hellenistic poetry. His scholarly output is extensive and influential, comprising five authored books, approximately forty peer-reviewed articles, and thirty-seven edited or co-edited volumes.

He is co-editor, together with Franco Montanari, of the internationally recognized series Trends in Classics Supplementary Volumes and the journal Trends in Classics (Walter de Gruyter, Berlin). He also serves on the scientific boards of leading journals in the field, including Wiener Studien, Rivista di Filologia e d’Istruzione Classica, and Eikasmos.

Since 2006, he has been Director of the Linguistics Department of the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki, contributing to national policy and strategic initiatives in language and philological research. He is a member of the Board of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece (MIET).

In recognition of his scholarly standing, Professor Rengakos has been a corresponding member of the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften (Philosophical-Historical Section) since 2016. He was elected Full Member of the Academy of Athens in 2011, underscoring his status as one of Greece’s leading contemporary classicists.
